SEO search demand in India, 2026: 485 keywords measured
Original data: 485 SEO and digital marketing keywords measured in Semrush’s India database. City demand, keyword difficulty, and why buyers are not searching AI-search jargon yet.

What we measured, and how
Between 15 and 17 September 2026 we measured 485 search terms that a business in India might use to find an SEO or digital marketing provider — every city, every service line, and the new AI-search vocabulary. Each was pulled from Semrush’s India database, one keyword at a time, and nothing below is estimated or modelled by us.
Of the 485, 293 show measurable monthly search volume. The rest register zero, which in Semrush means demand below its reporting threshold rather than literally nobody. 203 carry a keyword difficulty score — Semrush’s 0–100 estimate of how hard it is to reach the top ten. Those 203 are the basis for every difficulty figure in this piece.
We did this for our own planning. We are publishing it because almost nothing public describes this market with measured numbers, and agencies that quote “huge demand” rarely show their working.
Finding 1 — Mumbai is the largest city market, and one of the softest
The single largest city term we measured anywhere in India is “seo company in mumbai”: 8,100 searches a month at difficulty 24. The national term, “seo company in india”, draws 9,900 a month but at difficulty 42.
That pairing is counter-intuitive. Mumbai is the most contested commercial market in the country, yet the category term is softer there than in Ahmedabad, where “seo company in ahmedabad” draws 3,600 a month at difficulty 60 — the hardest of the city “seo company” terms. The data cannot say why. One plausible reading is that Ahmedabad’s local agencies have invested in exactly this phrase for years, while Mumbai’s larger agencies compete on national and enterprise terms instead.
Chennai (3,600 at 24), Noida (2,400 at 26), Kolkata (1,900 at 10) and Surat (880 at 9) follow the same pattern: real demand with little resistance.

| Keyword | Searches / month | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| India (national) | 9,900 | 42 |
| Mumbai | 8,100 | 24 |
| Delhi | 4,400 | 31 |
| Pune | 3,600 | 37 |
| Chennai | 3,600 | 24 |
| Ahmedabad | 3,600 | 60 |
| Bengaluru | 2,400 | 31 |
| Noida | 2,400 | 26 |
| Kolkata | 1,900 | 10 |
| Jaipur | 1,600 | 35 |
| Hyderabad | 880 | 17 |
| Surat | 880 | 9 |
| Rajkot | 880 | 18 |
| Vadodara | 480 | 10 |
| Gandhinagar | 90 |
Finding 2 — the market is easier than it looks
Of the 203 keywords with a difficulty score, 99 (49%) sit at 30 or below. Only 26 (13%) sit at 60 or above. Difficulty bunches between 10 and 39.
The hard terms are the generic head terms — “keyword research” at 95, “google ads” at 88, “content marketing” at 84. They are hard because the whole world competes for them, and most of the people searching them are learners, not buyers. The terms a buyer types are different: “seo company in [city]” sits between difficulty 9 and 37 in every city we measured except Ahmedabad.
The practical reading: a new site with sound technical foundations and genuinely specific pages can compete on most of the commercial demand in this market without first spending years building authority.
Finding 3 — buyers search for “SEO services”, not specialisms
“seo services” draws 18,100 searches a month in India, more than two and a half times any single specialism we measured. Next come “seo audit” (6,600), “on page seo” and “schema markup” (4,400 each), “ai seo” (4,400), “core web vitals” and “off page seo” (3,600 each).
Most of the specialist terms are informational — people learning what the thing is, often practitioners rather than buyers — and their difficulty is high (54–87) because global publishers already own them. For a service business, the lesson is to rank the service page for the plain commercial phrase and let specialist explainers support it, rather than betting on the jargon.

| seo services | 18,100 | 39 |

| schema markup | 4,400 | 79 |
| ai seo | 4,400 | 70 |
| core web vitals | 3,600 | 71 |

| shopify seo services | 590 | 23 |
| aeo services | 320 | 21 |
Finding 4 — nobody in India is searching the AI-search jargon yet
This is the finding we did not expect. The industry’s own vocabulary for AI search is almost unsearched in India. “llm optimization”, “llm seo”, “perplexity seo”, “google ai mode” and “generative engine optimization services” all measured zero. “geo services” registered 110 a month; “aeo services” 320.
The phrases that do carry demand are plainer: “ai search” (12,100 a month, a broad term that mixes tool-seekers with general interest), “ai seo” (4,400), “generative engine optimization” (2,400, most likely people learning what it is) and — the one that matters commercially — “ai seo services”: 1,300 a month at difficulty 27, the only AI-search term that is both a buying phrase and soft.
Forty of the fifty most-cited SEO firms worldwide now sell a named AI-search service. The acronyms they use describe how the industry talks, not how buyers search. Pages built around “GEO” or “LLMO” alone will be written for other agencies. Pages that answer “ai seo services” and explain the mechanism in plain language will be written for the customer.

|---|---|---|
| ai search | 12,100 | 74 |

Finding 5 — Gujarat has an anomaly worth knowing about
In Vadodara, “seo agency in vadodara” draws 3,600 searches a month at difficulty 14, while “seo company in vadodara” draws only 480. In every other city we measured, “company” outsearches “agency”. We have no explanation beyond local usage, and we report it as found.
Elsewhere in the state: “digital marketing company in ahmedabad” is the largest Gujarat term at 8,100 a month (difficulty 39); “digital marketing agency in surat” draws 2,900 at 20; “seo company in rajkot” 880 at 18. Gandhinagar is small — 90 searches a month for the SEO company term — and should be served from Ahmedabad pages rather than with a thin page of its own.

| Keyword | Searches / month | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| digital marketing company in ahmedabad | 8,100 | 39 |
| digital marketing agency in ahmedabad | 6,600 | 43 |
| seo agency in vadodara | 3,600 | 14 |
| seo company in ahmedabad | 3,600 | 60 |
| digital marketing agency in surat | 2,900 | 20 |
| seo company in surat | 880 | 9 |
| seo company in rajkot | 880 | 18 |
| seo company in vadodara | 480 | 10 |
| seo company in gandhinagar | 90 |
What this means if you are choosing where to compete
First, measure before you write. The two largest mistakes in this dataset would have been obvious guesses: targeting the AI jargon, which nobody searches, and assuming the biggest city is the hardest, which it is not.
Second, match the phrase buyers use in each city. “Company” and “agency” are not interchangeable — Vadodara proves it — and the difference is worth thousands of searches a month.
Third, difficulty is a planning input, not a verdict. A difficulty of 24 does not mean easy for every site; it means the current top ten are not especially strong. A technically sound, specific page can reach it; a thin one cannot.
Method and limitations
Source: Semrush Keyword Overview and Keyword Gap, India database, measured 15 September 2026 (most terms) and 17 September 2026 (city and national terms). Volumes are Semrush’s monthly averages over the trailing twelve months.
Difficulty: Semrush’s Keyword Difficulty, 0–100. Different Semrush reports can disagree — “seo company in ahmedabad” reads 60 in Keyword Overview and 45 in Keyword Gap on consecutive days. We report the Overview figure and note the range where it matters.
Zero volume means below Semrush’s reporting threshold, not proven absence. Search volumes are third-party estimates from clickstream and panel data; treat them as relative sizes rather than exact counts. The dataset excludes paid-search cost figures by design.
