SEO for the United Kingdom

London has the volume and Manchester has the better numbers. British search traffic is also worth roughly a third of American or Australian traffic for the same service. Every figure here was read in the UK database on 27 September 2026.

What the British market measures

Read in Semrush’s United Kingdom database on 27 September 2026. Difficulty is scored inside that one database and cannot be compared with a figure from another country.

TermSearches / monthDifficultyCPC
seo agency london9,90049%$5.98
seo agency uk6,60053%$10.88
seo agency manchester3,60036%$12.94
white label seo2,40023%$6.43

Semrush puts the requirement for the national term at 71 referring domains. It gives no such figure for Manchester or for the white-label term, which is a reasonable proxy for where the wall is.

Manchester is the better first move than London

London has the volume and everyone knows it, which is exactly the problem. The comparison that matters is not volume against volume but difficulty against what a visitor is worth.

Manchester is 13 difficulty points easier and its traffic is worth more than twice as much per click. London has 2.75 times the volume; on cost per click alone Manchester closes most of that gap, and it does it from a results page with fewer entrenched incumbents.

We are not claiming Manchester is a better business than London. We are saying that if a site has to pick one British city to be findable in first, the measured case for Manchester is stronger and almost nobody builds it that way.

The British market pays less than it looks like it should

This is the one thing about the UK that surprised us, and it is worth knowing before anyone plans a budget around it.

For the identical service at comparable difficulty, a British click is worth roughly a third of an American or Australian one — and it sits within three cents of the Canadian figure. We have not measured why, and we are not going to invent a reason. What it means practically is that UK volume should be discounted against US and Australian volume rather than compared with it directly. The full six-market comparison is here.

The reachable British term today is white label SEO at 23% difficulty — though whether Scapex services resellers is a question still being settled, and we would rather leave that page unclaimed than advertise a service we have not confirmed.

How we work with British clients

We have no UK office and this page will not imply one. Work is delivered from Ahmedabad; the time-zone overlap with the UK is comfortable, which is one practical reason British engagements are easier to run from here than American ones.

One genuine editorial matter, stated because it will come up: this site currently writes British optimisation in its body copy while every term Semrush reports uses American optimization. We have not yet standardised, and it is a decision about brand voice rather than a technical fault.

Common questions

Should we target London or Manchester first?

On measurement, Manchester. Read on 27 September 2026: "seo agency london" carries 9,900 searches a month at 49% difficulty with a $5.98 cost per click; "seo agency manchester" carries 3,600 at 36% with $12.94. Manchester is 13 points easier and each visitor is worth more than twice as much. London has the larger market, but it is also the one every established British agency has been defending for a decade.

Why is UK search traffic cheaper than American or Australian traffic?

We do not know, and we will not guess. The measurement is clear: "white label seo" carries a $6.43 cost per click in the United Kingdom against $22.38 in the United States and $18.23 in Australia, for the same service at comparable difficulty. Advertiser competition, agency pricing norms and currency all plausibly contribute and we have measured none of them. The practical consequence is that UK volume should be discounted rather than compared directly with US or Australian volume.

How many links would we need to compete for "seo agency uk"?

Semrush estimates 71 referring domains for that term, which it rates 53% difficulty on 6,600 searches a month. For comparison it gives no referring-domain requirement for "seo agency manchester" at 36% or "white label seo" at 23%, which is a fair signal about where the wall actually is.
